True beauty Episode 1 review. Security among insecurity

Blog Drama Episode Review Featured Features Korean Drama Review

This episode tells us that Korean society values beauty so much. That people get discriminated against due to their looks. How social norms can affect people’s lives and even lead them to suicide. School bullying can leave scars on people. Poor Lim Ju Kyung (Moon Ga Young). Is subjected to being bullied and harassed because of her looks even by her family, is something very serious to take for, if this really happens in a society, or is this only because it is a comedy?

Korean society is beauty conscious, that is a common fact. Korea is one of the main consumers in beauty products even in the men’s category. No wonder this girl is getting bullied due to her looks. According to facts, women get discriminated against because of their looks openly in Korea even at workplaces. No wonder this girl loses her hope to live in such a shameful situation when someone tells her to look at the mirror while rejecting her invitation to date.

Cruelty among High school kids is natural in their growing age, but to this extent is very unnatural. Luckily Lim Ju Kyung decides to live. That is a positive turn in life, which I am happy to see. She masterminds to turn a new leaf  in her life applying makeup and completely changing her looks. I don’t see the girl as ugly in the drama. But in a society where even the older people like her mother are also mocking her for her looks, I don’t see anything wrong in her doing makeup to change her personality. But we see emotional fear is there for being discovered. And being looked down upon and also lowered self esteem.

The good looking smart boy Lee Su-Ho (Cha Eun Woo) who is a person of fewer words is seemingly harbouring some emotional wounds also. Although he seems the high ranker in school in every aspect, teenage scars are there. This is a good drama to analyse how to overcome those emotional wounds in the teenage world in such a society. I am looking forward to how these characters overcome their insecurities to a positive path.
